Where to place a compressor...?

Soon to purchase the Wolf Dakota 90 ltr unit.

The intention is paint individual body panels in a temporary structure away from the house at the back of the garden.

The distance is around 40 foot from the garage to the back of the garden.

From what I've read compressors don't take to kindly to extension leads, apparently it'll trip the circuit breaker?

So, this means the compressor will have to stay in the garage to its nearby power source, and a 40 foot air line will be needed? Will I suffer issues due to a hose of this length?

A long hose shouldn't cause problems as long as it's bore is big enough.

A thick enough extension lead would be fine. I don't see how it could trip the circuit breaker, you may get a voltage drop which decreases the compressor power or the extension may get hot.

funny i have 2 running the one with the original short cable trips the breaker where as the one wired up to 10m cable does not

If the motor doesn't get up to speed it doesn't generate sufficient back emf to limit the current. Taken to the extreme this is what happens when you stall a motor. Some motors (small fans for example) may be marked "Impedance Protected", this means the impedance of the windings will limit the current to a safe level if the motor stalls.

The thickest common extensions use 1.5mm cable. But like you say, you can buy 2.5mm and make your own super thick extension.

I'm guessing it's very important that the motor DOES get up to speed though? Using a 2.5mm cable will allow this compressor to function correctly?
