Evening,

Sorry to post another 'what air compressor' thread but i cant really find a post in my price range.

I'm looking to get a air compressor, anything up to £200. The main use for it is to replace canned air for dusting etc. I would like oil free for cleaner air so that limits it down a bit. Also 24 Litre is probably the biggest i could get.

Although not really a must have use but would these be able to power a paint sprayer? Im thinking of painting sheds and boats etc.

belt drive are nicer. but direct drive are cheaper and are ok. ive never had a problem with oil of any piston pump so dont let that put u offgo for whatever u can aford. larger the pump and tank the better get the best u can aford

Have you thought of trying second hand in the local press or online gumtree, ebay etc? You could try baycrazy.com which will search ebay for local items that are collect only.

i would avoid direct drive they are noisey i dont think they will last as long either thats why they are cheaper

Thanks for getting back to me.

The oil free will be usefull for cleaning computers, so i would prefer oil free unless there is a good enough trap that catches it all? Will also need a inline water trap.

The noise isnt too much of a worry but the lifetime of the compressor is if they dont last that long. Is it the oil free motor that reduces lifetime or the direct drive? Doint really like buying second hand but thanks for the link, will take a look anyway.

Do belt driven compressors have mode CFM delivery?

One last question before i crawl into bed and this is prob something i should know.

Do these plug into standard 3 pin sockets that we get here in the uk?

You'll get more water in the line from compressing the air than from the pump loosing oil to the air. I find this then drops to the bottom of the receiver and comes out with the water when i blow it down. You will need a filter that will take out some of the water and oil. Oil for tools is added after the regulator on the line in a drip feed mech and is not supplied from the compressor.
Direct drive is going to suffer from more vibration than running a belt system. (shafts don't have to line up etc.). I'm not a heavy user but my compressor doesn't use any oil, could probably do with a change though
The free air delivery will depend on the power of the motor, design of the pump and the fittings used. belt or direct is going to be inconsequential I would have thought, its only transferring power from the motor to the pump.
and yes most can be plugged into a 13amp socket. 3hp is ~ 2.2kw

It's not "shafts lining up" on direct drive. There is none. A crankshaft is fitted right on the motor. Usually a force fit. Often there is meager counterweight.

So it is loud and vibrates like crazy. I put one of those diriect drive pumps on an old 20 gal tank (76l). It walked across the floor and was very loud. I had to add shock mounts to the motor. Most of the direct drive units I see have the identical Chinese motor pump combo.

I have seen too many of these fail. I got a 60 gallon tank cheap as one broke the connecting rods on the oiless pump. Since the pump and motor are cast as one unit, it was not reparable. Was probably 3 years old. It had a 6HP motor I wanted to try and reuse but the shaft was 3/4" long after removing the eccentric plate.

A belt drive has a pump with a balanced crankshaft and a large flywheel/pulley that cuts torque vibration down.

I had a C&H 3.5HP direct drive (4.9CFM FAD), my 5HP, (10.9 CFM FAD) is much quieter and probably over 20 years old and still works like new. Did have to put a new belt on it last year. Have never needed to add oil. Have changed it a few times. No oil in the air, a small amount in the water drained from the tank.

I don't trust oiless, I see many of them on Craig's list as "motor locked up". I see many belt-driven listed as "probably 20 years old, still works, just upgraded to a bigger one". A few have "needs motor".

Direct-drive -oil-filled pump seems to be in the middle as far as reliability.

Ok so you guys have put me off the oil free direct drive , no point in buying something thats going to break down in two minutes.

I may have to save up a bit for a belt driven one as the cheap ones are all oil free direct drive from the looks of it. Can you get 24 litre belt driven compressors though?

Whats the averge life expectancy of oiled direct drive compressors?

Can anyone recommend places to buy belt driven air compressors? Everyone on the net keeps pointing to american shops.

Still direct drive but it has oil in it. Would this only be able to run for 40% of the time or can the compressor be on constantly?

This would definitely not be suitable for continuous running, it's working life would be substantially reduced if it were used as such.

Ok so i would need to give it a break.

How many times do you reckon i would need to let it refill if i were to spray paint a medium size shed?

The manufacturer will specify a duty cycle. Personally I would go 10 cycles, then a 15 min rest and so on.

Not really sure how many it will take to spray your shed, depends on the gun consumption etc, it may well do it in 6 but if you find it gets to 10 stop for 15and let it cool off.

I went round today to have a look to see what it can do and the only thing is, i cant stop the out pipe from leaking. It leaks through the screw thread, ive tried putting some teflon tape around it and trying different connectors but they all leak.

Any ides how i could stop this?
