Which Sandblasting Kit?

Hi all,
About to start restoration on my Renault Dodge 7.5Ton Jap 6.
Want to clean underbody and chassis for painting.
Fair bit of welding to do in cab.
Been looking for places to hire equipment here.
The amount I need to do and the cost of hire makes more sense to buy a sandblast kit.
I dont want to buy throw away kit but also my budget is restricted,I will need to buy a compressor as well.
This will be a good move as I want to move to air tools and run more air tanks off the lorry compressor.
Looked on ebay and found kmdirect.co.uk 20 gallon,6-25cfm.XH-SBB20-1,is this the same one shown?
The section on sandblasting(Home-Page)reads well.

The eBay 20 gallon sandblaster is the one I have - it's pretty good. You'd probably have to buy a new tungsten nozzle for it as the ceramic ones don't last, and a couple of spare ball valves as they don't last.

Would be hard work with my setup to tackle a truck. I was running 3.5hp and 1.5hp compressors together and not really keeping as much pressure as I'd like. Two 3.5hp compressors might have been closer to the mark. Road tow compressor would be brilliant - could use a relly big nozzle with one of them.

aint sandblasting illegal now because it releases silica into the atmosphere. i think it's mediablasting (spelling?) these days

Yes, noone uses sand anymore. Coal slag, aluminum oxide, plastic, walnut shells, dry ice, and others.

I got glass bead for my blasting cabinet. Really like it, amazing on aluminum. Have walnut shells too that I haven't tried yet. I got them to do some work outside as it will biodegrade

For disposable media I've found J-Blast Supafine is the best. Chilled iron (G7) is a good re-usable media and I'm currently experimenting with crushed glass (Blastglass) - NOT to be confused with glass beads which are expensive.

Walnut shells and beads don't etch the surface of the metal, which you really need to do if you're going to paint it.

Crushed walnuts sounds like a good idea.
I have been looking at a SIP blast kit
2-4 bar
29-87 psi
Max pres-9 bar at 129 psi
10 cfm air requirement,
Could this run on lower hp?
I am in no hurry with the project
A lot of the paint and rust will come off with wire brush,
Then blast the awkward places.

My 5HP can almost keep up with my siphon blaster. A pressurized pot type will use a bit less.

I have a 60 gallon tank and have to stop every 5 minutes for a min to let it catch up. The bigger the compressor the better. Blasters take lots of air and will kill an underpowered compressor as it will run continuously.

I have just posted an add to find some used kit.
Or bits to build a compressor, 5- 7 hp It will be.
Or 2 x 3.5 compressors.
I am wanting to get more air tools so more air the better.

I use a Clarke 3 HP compressor and a 20 gall pot, it runs continuously but I don't need to pause at all.

The cost of new equipment here is steep,
Going to look for used kit,
May look for a small petrol engine(And convert it to gas)
To run the pump.

Dumb question coming up

I do have a shot blasting cabinet I can use but obviously a chassis won't fit into it, so have been looking at one of the fleabay 20 gallon jobbies as detailed in the tutorial section.

The dumb question is...

Does a 20 gallon pot hold 20 gallons of blast medium?!

I reckoned the 10 gall one held about 8 galls, so at a good guess I'd say the 20 gall one holds about 18.

Also bear in mind the stuff stops coming out before the pot is empty, so there is always some dead volume.

The frame I'm thinking of doing is a kit car mainly constructed from box and tube, this means I can get at most areas with a grinder fitted with a wire brush, would the blasting equipment be quicker or slower with a 14 cfm compressor (all I have at the moment)?

For flat areas I think the blaster would be slower but would do a better job than a wire brush, especially if the surface is pitted.

er, kmdirect.co.uk turns out to be a Kent newspaper! Could you check that URL again please as all thats on eBay at the moment seem to be 10L ones -though I saw 20L ones a few days ago, now I want one there aren't any!
