today I went to a historic local mill complex as part of a heritage festival and was a 2 hour guided tour around the site. Some of the buildings date back to the early 1800's and in more recent times the use of the site has changed to be used for commercial units, leisure interests, art gallery's and a diverse range of artist studios. now I have been going here for years and today I learnt this this is a piece of art
in all these years I thought that these were chutes for unloading waggons, into underground storage bins for the mills former usage......but today I learn that is not, its a piece or art to replace the original weigh bridge that was there.
the artist is Lawrence Weiner, and its called "Steel pennies don't come from or go to Heaven"
and the foundry which cast the sculpture is H.Downs
lets just say I wasnt expecting that, and along with other things Ive learnt today, my head hurts.
It was fitted in the early 1990's and I wonder how many thousands or people have walked or driven over it and never realised what it was?
as they say every day is school day.
