Who's good at wiring?

Hey Guys, right recently my dad aquired a compressor motor from a workshop that was to be demolished.

Ive had a look at it and i dont understand the wiring of the thing! to be honest anything more than 24V systems i get confused with so i need your help!

My first question is can anyone tell if it is a 3phase or a single phase because if its 3 phase then its obviously no good. When we got it it had the red yellow blue style cable for a feed but not all the leads seem to be used???? So either the leads had been disconected or they had just used a 3phase sheethed cable for protection.

As you can see from the photo's is has a cut off switch box and pressure regulator unit. The pressure regulator has three leads but the motor has four?........an extra black?

What do you guys recon?

(PS ignore the leads at the top of the box in picture three as they are what i was wanting to use as supply)

The last pic does show a plate with supply : 415V so it won't run directly off a domestic supply.

Can you take the cover off and see if there is a rating plate attched to the motor?

Haha i love this forum, I couldnt see the wood for the tree's! I will check tomorrow if i can see anything on the motor though rtbcomp.

I recognise that it says 415 on the plate but in the third pic did you put in the black loop on the contactor or was it there already, which wires were connected in the original red,yellow, blue supply cable.

sorry for the delay guys, ive had a look with all the covers off and ther's no markings on the motor, yes eil i actually put the loop in, as i managed to down load some circuits for the breaker, but when i got half way through i realised it dint make much sense. i think the fact that it states 415V on the sticker and there was originally blue yellow red feed, i think it must be 3 phase

Is there a cover on the motor where the cable goes in? Sometimes there is a wiring diagram on the inside of such a cover.

how many terminals are they on the motor and how many links. if it was wired in red yellow and blue then i would say its 3ph

That does look like a 3-phase DOL starter, it'd be a bit of a waste on a 1-ph motor In fact it wouldn't work unless you linked the contacts in series which is what I think MK was alluding to.

i asked because 3ph normally have 6 terminals and three sets of links. 1ph normally have 4 terminals and two links
