Has anyone tried to modify their existing garage door by adding a wicket door? I'm thinking of doing this but I'm not sure if my double garage springs can be adjusted for the extra weight. Or if I should just spit the door 2/3 1/3 and weld side hinges and an angle frame around. Any one tried this?

I only have a single garage and when the up-and-over door died I just sliced the door down the middle, braced it and turned it in to a pair of opening doors. It gives more room in the garage (roof space) and didn't cost me anything more than a sturdy bolt for closing it.

Splitting is probably the best idea for that, but you'd be able to get stronger springs for a old Henderson quite easy if you do decide to fit a wicket door. Or as one guy had done on door I went to repair that had been made taller, a cable and pulley with concrete counter weights had been added in addition to the springs.

I added 6" to each side of my Henderson up and over door, Making it 15 feet instead of 14 feet wide. I had to extend the 2 arms that the springs attach to by about 3" to give the springs a little more mechanical advantage to handle the extra weight. My door is around 25 years old and still as good as new, i was speaking to a garage door fitter and he said they don't make them anywhere near as strong or heavy now. when in the lifted overhead position there is no noticeable sag at all where as my BIL has a new light double door that sags like h*ll when open

I have converted both my workshop and garage 'Henderson' doors to side hinge with some extra bracing to give me the head hight to get a jacked up Landrover in. The doors as built are very lightweight and flexible and adding bracing would probably overload the flimsy lift spring etc.
Hi could you send me some pics of how you braced it and did the hinges. I've looked at mine and it seems like if I split 50/50 it might only need two vertical lengths of angle either side of the cut. The rest seems pretty substantial.
