So sitting here waiting on the deckys too finish doing thier thing I thought I'd entertain myself by doing another review of something I keep around tools wise.
So without further a do here gose. Had this hex key set for nigh on 3 years now. I'd say apart from my shifters and multi bit screw driver it is the most used tool in my tool bag.
The wiha magic ring hex key set part no 369RS9 click the link too see. https://uk.farnell.com/wiha/369rs9/allen-key-set-9pc/dp/3017977
The set covers sizes, 1.5 through too 10mm. The magic ring functionality starts from 3mm and up.
The keys themselves are a extra long and really really strong, I have managed too slightly bend some of the smaller sizes but I'm yet too meet a 1.5 and 2mm hex key that dosent. The larger sizes have all been used with cheater pipes and have held up extremely well too the abuse. Though the fact they are that bit longer dose mean I have found there too be less of a need too do that than with standard allen keys. See size comparison of a bohundus 10mm and wiha 10mm.
The magic ring holding function is a non magnetic way of securing the hex socket screw too the ball end only of the hex key allowing you too reach down into tight places and thread in bolts that you may not otherwise be able too reach. It is a circlip style design that compresses and catches on the hex socket side walls, I belive spare rings are available if they break how ever I have never broken one.
There are some disadvantages too this function though, it can make it seem as though the ball end of the hex key is securely in the hex socket screw, when it actually is not this then allows the hex key too slip damaging it and the faster. Note the damage and extra wear this has caused on the 8mm key in the picture below.
Apart from that and a bit of elector plating lost (see below pic) off the key heads they haven't deformed, camed over or anything else, they are quality built and well finished.
After 3 years of use the plastic holder is starting too wear out and not retain them as well as it use too though I have noticed this is common too all allen key sets with injection moulded plastic holders. A nice pouch on reflection would be better, though that is nit picking. The design an function of the holder though is very well thought out and a great piece of design work. So too get access too all the key you simply slide the holder too the open position, select the hex key you want and pull the head forward, the key then pivots free without having too mess around turning other keys out the way and generally wasting time. It actually works so well I have never found a need too extend the holder too it open position too remove keys and have always managed with it closed.
In conclusion for £25 it's about half the price of the equivalent PB Swiss set. I'd say it is definitely more than half the quality so I'd say they are a worth while purchase, while I have had the above mentioned issues with them I don't think its enough too offset thier usefulness or write them off. If you have the money go for the higher end set, if you don't then you can't go far wrong with these.
