Windows 10 issue.

This morning, my PC started up normally but then stalled before it loaded the taskbar and I was unable to access the start menu either. Moving the cursor to the task bar showed the egg timer. I forced the PC to shutdown and tried again with no change. All the icons were present on the backdrop and so I accedd Firefox from there to search for clues. After another few minutes, the taskbar loaded and all was normal.

Checking the boot event log showed nothing entered since the 15th of this month. Any clues? There has been an update to Windows in the last few days.

Your Windows event logs might show you something. Start menu, Windows Administrative tools, Event Viewer, Windows Logs. Have a look in the Application and System logs for entries around the time when it seemed to stall.

Explorer (as opposed to Windows Explorer which is something else entirely) is the Windows process that runs the Start Menu button and taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If that hung up when you booted the machine up then you'd get symptoms exactly as you described. The fact that the taskbar eventually appeared suggests it's now running ok again so I wouldn't worry too much (unless it keeps happening).
As to why it happened, unfortunately I've not got a clue! That would probably require a few hours in front of the machine looking at logs and even then I might not find anything. When was your Windows update in relation to the issue, was it at the next boot up or had it done a few successful boot ups after the update?

Yes I did and the second attempt had the same issue.

It was a few days ago and I had been using the PC since with no problem.

If you click on the System log again and then 'Save all Events As..' on the right hand side you'll be able to save the complete log as a file on your pc. If you do that I'd be happy to have a look through it if you want?

That's needless (and unhelpful) scaremongering, Gaz.

Sometimes system restore is the only effective way to undo issues (normally caused by other apps or drivers). I had to use it myself a week ago (on Windows 11, for the record) and it successfully sorted an issue with a USB driver that was causing the system to freeze.

The latest report (the first one in your list) only affects some systems and the workarounds seem a better solution than wiping a hard drive and reinstalling everything. People shouldn't be unduly concerned about doing a system restore if all other attempted fixes have failed.

Explorer, Fing and Bonjour service.

Could be worth uninstalling Bonjour service (you may need to remove any other Apple software that may depend on it like, shudder, iTunes).
Bonjour does hook into Windows Explorer so if it's hung then that could stop Explorer responding too.

If that didn't make a difference then uninstalling Fing would be a reasonable next step.
