wood saw of death, hah ha ha

i built this last christmas holiday, it started off on a scrap heap as a worn out saw blade, a broken generator rotating shaft with bearings, and whats left of my horsebox trailer,

took the engine off the generator, 11hp engine which starts first pull, added a double pulley, made a frame out whatever i could find fitted the blade on the rotating shaft, kept undoing the nut when it spun so put a locating peg on the saw blade so it wont over-run, bolted the axle on and a couple pieces ply on top, a reeving knife and an underguard, can be towed behind the landy if needed

was a bit scary on the first couple of goes, the blade cuts very well despite having a few teeth tips missing,i can have the blade nearly past singing, should make a top shield sometime, maybe over xmas

there is a blood brothers cup for scale (apt mug maybe)

Looks like a proper tool.
In East germany 1983 we saw a BMW R25 converted to a trike with a built in circular saw, jack up the back wheel fiddle about a bit and saw wood.
Amazing device proper mother of neccessity inventioneering no irony intended just a mobile saw.
Sadly the photos got lost years ago.

Looks remarkably safe compared to some of the farmer lash ups I've seen. The worst of which was an old linkage mounted job, designed for an old fergy or similar. It woukdn't work on his new tractor, so he welded a 1000 rpm shaft on the end and put it on his shiny 100 horse tractor...at double its speed. Worked fine until the blade shattered with predictable consequences :-(

Here's mine, not home made but just as lethal looking.
It started life as a flat belt drive 36" saw, I could never keep the tension in the belt so I welded on a PTO stub and now drive it through a PTO shaft from my T20.

It also has a 30" TCT blade on it now, it looks rusty but it's incredibly sharp. Recently a massive Oak bole came down off the bank on our drive, around 5' in diameter and 8' high so every now and then I cut a hunk off with the chainsaw (which knackers the chain) and stick it over the saw. That's why the saw is so low, I had to sink the bottom 6" into the ground so I can get the Oak lumps off the trolley and onto the saw.

Reminds of my Grandad's contraption when I was a kid. I was scared to death of it and never even saw it running.

Great use of odd bits . I've been keeping an eye out for a large saw blade to make something along these lines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg1dG_KmHWc but not come across anything suitable yet. I did though track down the huge sawbench (over 1ton in weight) that served the family business (a sawmill) for nearly 100 years. I had assumed it had been scrapped when the old yard was cleared up 20 something years ago but luckily it was saved by the digger driver who still has it. The old man used to be in charge of the throttle on the Forson Super Major that was used to power it in it's last few years of use when he was a kid and presumably it was powered by a steam engine before that. Despite being sat out uncovered for over 40 years now I'm told the blade / bearings still run as smooth as they did the day the business closed.
