Heres my work in progress, all the materials were free more or less. I know its not as strong as a box section bench would be but it suits my needs.
Dexion shelving as a frame for my bench;

A few lengths of rough sawn 6*2 timber free from a mate who was building a cow shed. Timber is bolted to the frame and planed and sanded roughly level;

And a 4" vice to the left hand side, plus another 6" vice still to be fitted to the other side;

Im still debating whether to add some sheet steel to the top for welding purposes.

Although I don't usually weld on my 'good' bench, I do cover the top with some 6mm cheap chipboard as a sacrificial covering, it lasts ages and can be chipped, oil soaked, burnt and then simply removed to leave the original surface looking as new.

Nice bench, anything that is free is good! In fact it's great!

One small suggestion, if you still have access to the materials I would be inclined to put one or two shelves beneath, this would provide more rigidity as well as providing storage space.

Thanks Frank, il be putting in the extra shelves as you suggest, I was still trying to work out what heights I needed them at as I was considering having the compressor tucked away under one of the benches.

I would be inclined to put a shelf about 100-150mm below the top which would be useful for storing hammers, files clamps etc to save cluttering the bench, then additional shelves below to suit your needs.

In terms of the compressor, if you're using the full Dexion shelf you could cut a hole in the middle to sit around the compressor, this would provide the rigidity you want as well as being an anti-theft measure to prevent your compressor getting nicked.
