If you think it is not working AT ALL then try pointing a tv remote at the sensors as the IR should trigger it or get a ciggy lighter that uses a flint and spark it in view of the sensors as that will also trigger it.

It is switching but the issue is that the view through it is not "stable" the weld point is either too bright and the surrounding area very very dark or things just not clear / too bright...
I assume you have tried adjusting the controls ?
I had similar issue with a helmet of mine. It would trigger from the tv (not remote !) or even the house light. Once triggered it would take ages to change back to clear. I tried replacing batters but had issues with that so put originals back in. It seamed it was to sensitive so I tried identifying which sensor seamed to trigger more and stuck some semi clear tape over that sensor to make it less sensitive which seamed to help a bit but got fed up and ordered a new one as they are a lot cheaper now.
I had a cheap one that came with my welder and it always had a dark spot but it was not a problem as it was always in the same place so I set the shade so I could use the rest of it. When it packed up I got the SWP from Weldequip on here and it's been a good middle of the range helmet.
Is it a solar one or does it have batteries?
Sometimes replacing the batteries will help (as @mike 109444 said) but also, letting the solar ones 'charge' by sunlight helps too... Not much chance of that with the weather we are having though!
They've all got batteries - just some don't advertise the fact and/or they aren't realistically replaceable. I had an Esab I quite liked but the batteries had gone so after I'd got the replacement I tried cracking it open to see if I could maybe replace them and have two helmets - the innards were full of potting compound so no way to extract the old batteries without doing damage.
