Workshop chain hoist plans...

Hi Folks,

Planning to make a workshop at some point, we've an old pole barn/shed that's becoming redundant so I'm having the space, will be able to fit a 35' x 18' (one 15' bay and one 20' bay) steel frame in there, I'm thinking 9/10' to the eaves, but I was wanting an overhead girder track for a chain block, can I run this from drop-down plates hung from the apex of the frames, obviously the steel will need to be strong enough but I'm only talking of a max 1ton hoist as I won't be able to fit anything big in there at only 10' eaves.

If this isn't possible I had thought of having two hanging from the middle posts of the building that would meet in the middle somehow to allow use of one block that would slide over from one to the other, this would cover most of the floor of the building provided I put them in the right spot.

Any comments or recommendations?

Also anyone know of any building frame fabricators that would do me a price on the frame?

Really useful IMO to have mobile lifting even in a home garage. Here's what I fabbed up for a new garage at my place:

The steel RSC "Purlins" run from end to end in the garage and are within a couple of mm of parallel through their length. The runway beam hangs underneath on four rollers on each side, and a girder trolley with a chain block hangs on the runway beam. I have a similar setup in my main garage workshop which has been really useful over the years.

Is that held up with an Acrow ? I've got a new pair left over from a job and it gives me an idea

Its a round heavy pipe welded to the steel bench, It wont take a lot of weight but enough to save my back

Stueeee, that looks exactly what I want, what size are the rails? What kind of rollers does the runner beam sit on?

I've a lump of 178x102x19 UB that's perfect for the runner beam, and have several girder trolleys for the block to run on.

The Purlin rails are 152 x 152 x 23 Universal Column. As they have a span of 9.6M they are supported along their length by two "truss" supports that I fabbed from 152 x 152 x30 UC -part of one of them is visible in my original photo, here is what the complete truss looks like:

What kind of rollers does the runner beam sit on?

The rollers came from 1 ton girder trolleys, I just cut each side plate in half, which gave me 4 wheels for each end of the runner beam from 2 girder trolleys. each wheel/plate is bolted onto the runner beam with 3 off 10mm capscrews; the plate/bolt setup made it easier to actually install the runner beam and also allowed me to fit steel shims between the wheel plate and the runner beam to optimise the spacing of the wheels.
