Workshop extraction.

Evening all. Over the last few months I've been setting my old metal shed up so I can use it for doing welding at home instead of ataat work and teach my son how to weld. All coming along nicely and today the kitchen extractor I ordered of flea bay turned up so will hopefully get that plumbed in over the next few evenings. I was just wondering what all you guys have done about welding fume extraction.

I originaly used two 12" fans.
They gave up in the end and i now have one 14" fan from machine mart (blue one in the pic).

It's not too bad...gets rid of the fumes but doesn't seem to drag the welding gas away.

Clears any build up of smoke etc from the shed.

those fan kits aren't strong enough the airflow on them is minimal

We are awaiting a 12inch fan to be fitted through the wall at work by landlord.

I thought I would give one a go as use one similar at work to draw fumes away when working in tight spaces on the boats. We have the pipe on magnets so it can be clipped to boat above where I'm working.

Seen the aussie mine welders use those inline fans @brightspark mentioned with a long hose on the intake and depending on situation either take the fumes away from them or blow it away. Think they shift a lot of air.

You have to be careful using small inline fans as extractors as they stall quite quickly if you hang a long pipe off the back of them, effectively they dont have a lot of suck. I tried this recently & it was next to useless.
A centrifugal blower shifts far more air & has more suck. Just bought one off eblag for a specific job, 6" dia inlet 1200m3 per hr & comes with a speed control as well, nice bit of kit for £84.

Those domestic extractors might be ok for local fume removal (from soldering for example) but for wholesale fume extraction I think you need to be investing in something a bit more substantial. I have a 450mm Clarke unit in the wall of my new shed (shown running just cos it looks cool!) that THB is probably not sufficient now that the shed has grown (from just under 300 sqft to a little over 800). They aren't that expensive and pretty easy to install.



It would evacuate the old shed very effectively in about 30 seconds or so.

Have to remember to have a door open though or it stalls!

Edit: Scrap that, I've just looked at the price of them!

I don't remember telling my wife that's how much I paid for it!!!

I have a spare one of these Vent-axia jobbies, taken from the old kitchen window, that I will install in my shed at some stage. It moves a lot of air for its size.

A few years ago I used an electric car radiator fan to keep my garage clear, hooked up to an old car battery and a small trickle charger.

I have one of the OPs style extractors in my garage that I tried to use for welding extraction. My personal experience was not good but yours may differ!
I think I will get one of the portable types like this

I really like my extracion arm, better to extract at source than try to clear the fug after I reckon.

It's just a 4" ducted centrifugal blower attached to an overhead pivoty arm.
