my son came round this morning .
we went through the instructions and still wouldn't work.
check the compressor psi 115. the booklet said 110-120 psi.
is you gauge working Dad...I think so son why?
the gauge says 50 psi! oh me thought .
he turned the knob and walla its working as it should.
we both laughed.

Went to Falmouth for a job like that @brightspark asked if they had checked plug under desk running a trigger radio for remote base, was told in no uncertain terms yes, was a contract job 2 hours to be on site! drove down there 2 AM start, walked in moved foot rest under desk switched plug on drove home Nr. Bridgewater they moaned about the bill

A friend got called out to fix a UPS. I think he drove about 3 hours to get there. Sure enough there was some beeping. After a quick check he asked the customer if they had any A4 paper. They seemed surprised but the beeping stopped when he loaded the paper into the printer next to the UPS. red faces all round at the customer.

Had the same at the Ford works in Wales, 200 mile drive to change a fuse in an amplifier with its lights out, back in the days of 10Broad36...*

I got called out to a computer that kept rebooting . Sure enough the start screen appeared then went blank and showed the start screen again. I pulled the keyboard forward and it booted fine. "what was it" cried the boss. The operator had pushed the keyboard against the side of the machine and the keyboard had a reset button on the side which was being pushed in. The boss wasn't happy about paying a callout and "repair". He said we should have known what the fault was and told them over the phone. Still sent the invoice and they had to pay it.

Years ago I called the furnace repairman because the pilot wouldn’t stay lit he gave the pilot a few good hits with a screwdriver breaking off the oxide and charged 50 bucks.

I was sent into a Doctor's surgery to replace a modem ordered by the previous engineer as they could not upload their end of month billing and were panicking about getting paid. Fitted the modem and it would not dial out, they had not paid the bill on the dedicated BT line!

I think I can top that...

Going back 20+ years:
"Satellite" office of a large national company, panicking call to tech support (me!), couldn't upload the end of month figures and the salesmen were all panicking they wouldn't get theit commission paid!

(Paraphrasing a bit)
"Let's check the modem's working, can you tell me which lights are on on the front panel?"
"no, can't get to it right now"
"is it not by your computer?"
"no it's in the basement with the server!"
"OK, so pop down to the basement and note down which lights are on"
"I can't go in the basement"
"Oh, is it locked?"
"no, the firemen won't let me"
"Oh, why's that?"
"They're still pumping it out"
"pumping it out?"
Yeah, it flooded"
"Flooded?"
"the water's half way up the stairs..."
