zinc primer?

Hi

I've just purchased an old austin mini, It has had a new rear quarter welded in but there is rust speckles showing through the primer on panel (it's never been painted)

I want to sand it back, but I'm not sure if zinc primer will protect the surface ok? Or if the rust has already bitten into the metal? Will i need to put any other rust remover type product onto the metal?

I'm new to this, I won't be painting the car yet. Trying to sort multiple panels out but I want them protecting?

Any help HUGELY appreciated.

Primer is porous so any damp will cause rust, best to sand the primer off and then inspect the rust, if just light surface it will sand off but a wipe over with rust remover won't do it any harm, then get some epoxy primer on the panel. This will seal the moisture out until you do paint it properly

Thanks for that. I will sand it tomorrow night, see what the damage is. It was a new panel, the car was put under a tarp for three days until I got it.

if you dont want to epoxy it ..prime it and lash a quick bit of aerosol gloss on it , then sand it off when ready to paint

I sanded the panel, nothing looked like it had eaten into the panel. It looked all shiny when i sanded it, I painted some rust protector stuff on (had it laying around) then painted over the panel with primer. It looks like its ok for now.
