I’m almost at the point of proceeding with insulating my garage, primarily to cut down on noise transmission.
I will be running it as a small workshop with a small Cnc router.
I want to cut down on as much noise as possible.
The router will be enclosed with a water cooled spindle, but there will be extractors and vac pumps running so a good loud droning.
I am waiting on a new insulated roller door that is being installed next week, to replace the drafty “snare drum” up and over door.
I had planned to build free standing 100mm stud walls with 100mm rockwool acoustic insulation and 12mm acoustic plasterboard.
But now I’m leaning towards 18mm MDF lining the block walls with a sandwiched layer of silver bubble insulation to provide a vapour barrier and a small amount of isolation. Then a layer of 18mm ply “glued” to the mdf with a product like Sikaflex.
So: Block, Bubble foil, 18mm MDF, air gap (dot and dab adhesive), 18mm ply.
This would provide a very solid and dense inner wall.
The ceiling will be acoustic plaster board and rockwool in either scenario. I will also build a movable wall behind the door.
Thoughts?
