where are they discussing? Here is a 3-page ( ! ) discussion pro- and con- carbide tips on caliper jaws. In Post #53 someone suggests that the carbide tips can be used as scribers, but that comment is made as a joke.....
In my opinion, a caliper with carbide jaws is fairly standard practice for marking metal. Why do they treat this as a joke?Sorry, forgot the link:
Boy, those guys do like to waffle on.Carbide tipped calipers?
Hi all, first off I just want to say hi as I've recently joined the forums and I'm starting my first year in the machining apprenticeship this week. Now time for my real question... Have any of you had experience with carbide tipped digital calipers? I currently have a set of almost new 6"...www.practicalmachinist.com
I looked at the cost of professional marking tools, calipers and compasses and their hybrid derivatives. I looked and closed the search pages with a strange feeling. 300-500 euros, oh yeah...They were arguing about the wear resistance and hardness of the carbide compared to plain steel, and the verdict seemed to be that the extra $100 was not worth it. The suggestion that you could justify it if you wanted to scribe metal with them and the "wink" emoji implies that most of them had not considered or known about this advantage.
