I'm not sure if this is the best place to write all this information but it's my first post here
Hi guys, I'm 23 and from the midlands, I haven't really achieved much in life and I'm getting old, haven't even been in employment either, been applying to loads of warehouses but i guess time of year + lack of experience has been letting me down, failed 3 interviews and applied to a couple hundred through sites. Feeling a bit useless but I'll be doing an intensive MIG welding course (2 weeks, 8 hours per day) in May and I'm looking forward to it.
I'll end up with a level 2 city and guilds qualification in MIG welding (it's a fairly a small 7 unit qualification) but I'm hoping it'd help me get into an entry level welding job, I'm not really sure how getting employed in welding works in the UK, but it seems like most places will require a welding entry test which I'm hoping I'd be able to pass, my CV is just really empty so I think doing the course would help me with being able to slap something on the CV and perhaps increase my chances of being invited for an interview + weld test. I don't have any high expectations tbh, just wanna get my foot into the door, really don't mind working minimum wage for like 6 months either when starting out either as long as I get the practice to move up eventually.
On the side I study a BSc in mathematics with the open university and I'll be done with it in about 2026, I've always been passionate with maths and I've been studying ahead for a while now, so it really won't affect the hours I can put into working as a welder. I've dropped out of mech engineering a few years ago and did a level 3 in engineering at college - kinda wish I did some sort of trade course or something different, or maybe a HNC/HND in engineering after my level 3 and maybe tried to get work as a machinist, that seemed quite fun while I was at college too. A lot older now though and I want to try get my foot into the door quicker.
That's about it so far though, and the above describes my plan with what I want to achieve with welding, welding does seem really appealing to me and I've been watching a ton of random welding videos (channels like welderfabber, etc) but I've got no experience with it yet, I'd appreciate any replies or advice too!
