No, dead end, as in 15mm by 10mm high, 10mm deep, dead end. Two of them, one either side, at 10 and 2 o'clock.
I assume then that the "window" facing the inlet side would still act as a port, releasing pressure in the crankcase as the piston descends since the gap would allow pressure to vent, possibly into some transfer ports. It definitely doesn't face the exhaust in any engine I have ever seen but it could be a way of changing the port timing without cutting away more of the actual port.
Really difficult to second guess, I am certainly no expert but I could see what a thing does if only you had the other major parts.
<edit> hang on. 10mm deep in the piston??! That's a chunky piston! Are we talking cross purposes here?
