A look at my masonry heater

sort of like a wood powered economy 7 heater ,, the 45 gallon barrel heater works the same way , by adding the extra barrels to lengthen the chimney to get extra heat exchange , but the down draft bit is really clever .
Very interesting thread ,,, as Ive a new chimney to make for a heater in a farm workshop , It will now have a u bend in it .

be very careful with downdraft you will hit 2000f degrees

rocket stoves also hit this temp in the vortex area

on the reference of the above and also rocket stoves a straight up and down system will hit these temps as well

if left at full bore then can and will crack any system as they are really powerful in there heat

the video above uses this up and down in the barrel on the outside stove hence why you see a high glow on it

Intresting vid here quick plasma cut mock up of a downwards furnace I watched this morning but thought it is relevant to this thread and looks like the chap will be making some sort of heat exchanger for it as thats the benefit of having fire go downwards the heat should be easier to capture along with ease of placing more fuel in.

I don't understand what you mean, do you mean show all the firewood used for a day?

If so then this is about how much I would use on a day like this, is it maybe 4-5 kilos of pine wood, if it gets colder like below -10C, I will burn two piles a day like this:

Water is no good if you want to let the system sit over winter.

Similar concept to the traditional Sussex Farmhouse of the 1700’s and 1800’s. A huge square masonry chimney in the centre of the building, often with back to back fires in two or more rooms, acting as a massive storage heater. All rooms arranged round it to conserve the heat. Wood fired of course.

Yes that's it, but I do have a pile of kindling on the top of the fire in the picture, that gets the fire going.
