Maybe so, I'm talking replacing cast iron pumps where the cost of a 'replica' new one is twice the cost of a new more efficient compressor. I see this daily.

I had a look at the cable running down to the garage and the Clarke 150 needs a 30Amp supply. There is a 3 core 2.5mm cable looks nice a big.

But looking over Table 4E4A of the 17th Edition of IET Wiring Regulations.

It is saying I only have 28 amps if it is underground?

Also bear in mind you may have to adjust the size of cable if the garage is a long way from the house to avoid a voltage drop.

That's for a xlpe 90° swa cable, check if yours is pvc 70° as that's rated even lower. (there should be a bs number on the cable you can check against)
I've just had to upgrade my garage supply with a length of 4mm as I want the full 32amps supply instead of the 13 amps I have at the moment! As I want a decent compressor too.
Is your garage fed from its own mcb? If so you could try a 25 amp C or D type as that will probably do the job without upgrading, the compressor won't draw 30amps once it's running and the C or D type mcb will prevent it tripping on start up.
Just don't have any heaters on at the same time.....

I'll echo rtbcomp about the Clarke SE16C150, had mine 16 years and it's had a head gasket replacement, a clean up of the nrv and a new capacitor which it didn't really need. Just about copes with a modified Clarke blast cabinet using a 3mm nozzle. Mine lives outside in a plastic B&Q garden store and still looks in good condition too.

That's another expression of FAD (free air delivery). I was referring to people quoting the receiver capacity as if it were the 'power' behind the compressor.

A number of us hobbyists have bought the (Chinese made) Wolf 90L 3HP compressor.

It was around £250 delivered, compared to £330 for a comparable Clarke from MachineMart. Much quieter than a direct drive and reliability (spread across the membership here) seems very good.

Oh - one other point. The wolf does fine on a 13A plug and I've never had a problem with it in the garage on a C curve MCB but I do occasional have it trip the breaker on the B curve protected external socket. That suggests (and it's not a surprise) that the startup surge is too high for a standard (aka B curve MCB protected) 13A socket.
I would, however, caution against simply replacing the MCB as you need to have an electrician measure the resistance to earth on your circuit to ensure that a C curve MCB will trip (@brightspark can probably state a more accurate set of requirements).

My point, I guess, was to dissuade people from simply going to B&Q, buying a C breaker and swapping it for a B curve. I think you've persuaded them, Mr.F

All the above about C&D curve mcb's is correct, maybe I was assuming the OP has an RCD in his dist board. If he does it will help get around the max Zs issues. Best bet would be to upgrade the cable if it's possible ( I had to dig up the lawn for mine) .

Doncaster cables said its 33 Amps buried so I'm in luck. I can run the Clarke 150 belt on that:-)

My mum has had sparks test it regular and they were always impressed with the cable.

Just need a VAT free voucher if anyone has one they don't need.

Should I start a new thread asking for one somewhere more noticeable by the masses?
