Thank youI have read somewhere these are from using s-6 wire that has more Manganese (or other addition), and/or some residual oil/etc. on the material.
If you were out of gas, you would see a much worse weld IMHO.
I'll bet your welds didn't look that nice with straight CO2.....I've had this recently too:

Since changing to this from pure C02 I seem to get the brown staining
Actually interesting as I’m using hobby weld gas’s. What I get is more like soot than rust.
I was mig welding but didnt leave the torch in place. I think it would wipe off.Did you leave the gas playing on the weld for a little while as it cooled? I can imagine finishing off and then immediately stopping when the heat has had a chance to build up through the metal would allow oxides to form in the air unless the shielding gas was continued for a little longer. Does it wire brush off?
