Looking at it from out of the box you could have machined the old one to accept a couple of crankshaft thrust washers of a suitable size

Would've been a good method. What temp does PBA melt at? Saved all the offcuts and the old fork, re-melt one day perhaps?

Back in my school days I made a brass beaker using "Graded Silver Soldering". Its over fifty years ago now and the heat source was town gas and compressed air. Once the brazing hearths and torches were converted to natural gas they were never as good as before. Anyway I cannot remember the names of the hard silver solders but the one with the lowest melting point was called "Easyflow" The beaker was formed around a truncated steel cone then it was wired with steel wire in order to hold the seam together. Hard silver solder was used when the brass was red-hot (only a dull red) Once cooled it was back to the cone for planishing (giving it a hammered finish) Next the handle was silver-soldered on with "Easyflow". The base comprised a brass ring formed from brass that had been rolled square, formed into a circle and hard-soldered. A round disc was silver-soldered onto this with Easyflow. Finally the prefabricated base was soldered into place with soft solder.

I wish that I had access to such equipment now as I have a badly made folding propeller that needs attention. The problem is that when the blades unfold they don't stop when they are at ninety degrees to the shaft. Instead they keep on going and do a poor impersonation of an umbrella that has been blown inside out. The result is reduced diameter and pitch which gives poor driving. Some kind of stops need to be reverse-engineered. Incidentally the prop was used on a Sadler 25 yacht but the results were poor. (Oh what a surprise!)

Anyhow for building-up worn brass parts "Easyflow" might be a good choice as one can silver-solder a new piece of brass onto the job. Such a modification is reversible so its not a one way trip if things go wrong.
