I picked up a Fobco bench drill and the weekend, except that it turned out to be a Meddings LB2, but thats another story !
In the spirit of buying tools on the basis of want, rather than need ........... I like it rather than need it. I think.
While I was there, I was offered a low use Colchester Student lathe that seems to be in good nick, but I am wondering if it offers much advantage over my Viceroy TDS, apart from the slightly larger capacity in swing.
It is obviously much heavier built and has a more powerful motor, but would it be worth the hassle of changing ?
I am not a professional user, and do not do what I would describe as precision work (at the moment) or even use it every day. I have heard and read that Colchester are not the best in terms of quality, but surely not that bad. There are lots around
My other problem is that it would have to be stripped into manageable lumps to get it where it needs to go. I know this is far from ideal, but needs must and all that. Does anyone know if it can be done. I was thinking tailstock (easy) saddle assembly, headstock, bed, and cabinet. Can this be done relatively easily does anyone know ? There are a lot of videos online, but none seem to cover the basic big lumps.
Ideas and opinions welcome.
