When I converted a type 2 from a van to a camper in the 80's, the elevating roof frame was timber. I drilled loads of holes around the perimeter, put a load of woodscrews through the steel in to the supplied wooden frame, cut the big hole with a jigsaw about an inch inside the frame then folded a lip of an inch or so up inside the vertical face of the timber frame, then more woodcrews.
I reckon it was stronger than original!
It was supplied by Richard Holdsworth conversions who were pretty well respected at the time. I followed instructions to the letter. Never leaked and the van never folded in half, no under pans!
