they need to bolt through to the chassis, or they won't be good for much! Its a tongue and groove ally bed so not ideal for lashing to but I want them flush and its going to have dropsides so cant attach to to outer frame rails

The 3rd pic in my eyes is wrong, they should hinge from the outside so the load path is straight in line rather than trying to lever the pin out.
Those housings aren't the greatest anyway, I would far prefer these
TT Lashing Ring
Recessed TT lashing ring with 57mm leg centres2500 daN (2.5 Tonne) permissable tensile loadSupplied complete with 2 nyloc nuts and securing plateDouble forged constructionZinc plated finishwww.nationwide-trailer-parts.co.uk
These are super strong if you go through a chassis mount, can be flush, and don't have any of the weaknesses of those D rings.
straight in line , this means the load has pull on only two of the mounting bolts and the hinge pin , not arguing by the way just trying to understand load forces , where as as you correectly say the other way around all load is pulled on pivot pin and shear against four hold down points (not direct shear) So I am geussing it all depends on metal strength around shear pivot pin and the actual strength of the pin , in reality it needs one of those pull tests to determine what rating it will fail at dependant on how its mounted .they need to bolt through to the chassis, or they won't be good for much!

The eye rotates about 45 degrees so I dont think there will be many times for what I carry the pin will be levered by the eyeThe 3rd pic in my eyes is wrong, they should hinge from the outside so the load path is straight in line rather than trying to lever the pin out.
