Got to try out the GYS Alien welding helmet this weekend.
First the good bits.
The helmet is quite well made, not considerably better than a Parweld or other mid-range helmet, but OK.
Head strap has plenty of adjustment in all directions, so you can get the viewing area where you want it, (would help if instructions explained half the features!)
The cover screens are easy to fit inside and outside, they have a good amount of static when you peal the protective film off them and then pick up dust. but they all do!
Did find after a few hours use the hinge tension needed a few extra turns to keep helmet up.
The grind function is good and you can see most of what you’re doing. Also its the off switch fo the screen.
Welding = view is very good, and large, you can see the weld pool clearly and the filter levels are relatively easy to adjust, when welding you can see the colour of the weld pool changing when going from clean metal to rust. most of the time it was easy to see what was going on and felt quite natural to use.
Not so good bits.
If the arc is not always visible to the sensors, the screen flickers from shield to no shield in quite an annoying fashion, almost like a strobe (this was under a car with the torch in a valley) maybe more noticeable because the view is so clear, but it doesn’t help keeping an nice steady weld going!
The helmet is large and not ideal for cramped spaces, had to resort to old fixed screen for very tight work.
It can be overly sensitive where it kept darkening because of the Scangrip LED work light, so you have to be careful where work lights are placed!!
Don’t like the hinged piece at the back of the headband, it falls in the way when putting it back on sometimes, then requires 2 hands to put it on?
Conclusion. This is more doing nice welding on a bench type helmet than it is crawling around under cars.
Would I buy it again = Yes, the view is so much better than the previous generations of auto darkening helmets, and even after a weekend of welding under a car and being thrown around the gravel it looks like new.
look forward to using it with TIG and ARC soon
Im not a professional and these are just my personal observations.
Other views/opinions are available
Will try and add some pic's this week
