I used waxoyle to smear on machines that were waiting to be restored, sometimes left outside for a couple of years. When I restored them I found the layer would come off with a stanley blade leaving a well preserved surface. It works its way into threads as well making disasembly easier. I had an old tin I bought 32years ago when I bought my first car MGB.
I've been using lanoguard inside my workshop on machine surfaces and I'm still getting rust.
