I have been looking at redoing the lathe pulleys, currently have a SPA180/1 bored out and fitted on a hub of other sizes to give a step pulley, but most of the time the 180 is all that gets used as I can overspeed the motor to get 1000rpm
The step pulley has a bit of lateral wobble that I would like to fix. Due to the wobble I dont want to risk higher speeds on the smaller pulleys, so plan to seperate it from the hub, redo the shrink fit and if its better, turn it to run true. For now I have found a single 60mm pulley to get higher speeds.
However at high load the belt can slip at the motor end, but as that is a double pulley it would make sense to have two belts and a double on the spindle end.
I dont think I can use a taper lock as the spindle nut tightens up against the pulley and spacers in the stack to preload the bearings. The spindle wants a 29mm ID pulley bore with a 4mm keyway.
Ebay wants £50 for a pilot bore SPA180/2
It is looking like I may need to melt down some alu and cast a blank to turn myself. Turning pulleys is fun but at 180mm a bit big and awkward for my lathe.
Any ideas? Someone suggested a while back that poly V belts are better, or toothed timing belts, I cant remember?
