About 18 months ago I asked if anyone on the forum had one of these
but complete so that the missing part could be identified.
@Wendelspanswick very kindly dismantled his and provided me with the dimensions of the missing part
Flushed with success after my last 'gig,' making a small contact point for a DTI, I decided it was time to have a go at the repair.
Having given the matter all of 10 minutes' thought, I set about rounding the end of a piece of 5mm silver steel and reducing the diameter to 4.71mm.
Cue a gratuitous shot of the repaired DTI setting the parting tool to part off to the finished length, 8.75mm.
The parted off trunnion
Next thing was to set up the milling slide on the lathe with the dividing head.
Levelling the arbor
Who else bought one of these? I only rediscovered it a few days ago when tidying up, so it was fresh in my mind when it came to adjusting the angle of the dividing head to cut the sloping face (11° give or take a few minutes)
Milling the flat
It was at this point that I left with a tiny piece of tool steel, that I had somehow to hold, to drill a hole and mill a flat on. Rounded at one end and a small vertical register at the other.
Time for a rethink. Since the dividing head was still set up I decided it would be easier to machine the angle edge on the end of a long piece of silver steel and then use the additional length to hold it while doing the other operations. Glaringly obvious I guess
This way I didn't need to worry about trying to get a 0.5mm step, that would become one of the finishing operations. I did both ends, because you never know...)
More to follow...
