Hi Folks, I need to fix some leaky axles on an old piece of plant. The drive shafts on all 4 corners are leaking to a greater or lesser extent. The issue is that new seals dont do anything, the problem is that the seal surfaces are worn.
I am weighing up my options. New pattern shafts are surprisingly cheap but I have 8 in total. (each corner has a shaft in the axle, then a UJ and then another stub axle into the hub) and I am not against buying new but given that he axles are otherwise just fine I was wondering about repair options.
Speedi Sleeves are one possibility although I dont have any experience with them. Another would be flame spraying or other form of thermal coating on the worn areas. I was therefore wondering if anyone has any suggestions for someone who does this in the York/East Yorkshire area. I can do the machining if needed as I have a lathe (assuming the material added to the shaft is not too hard to turn). However, before I can decide on a course of action I need to decide if its going to be cost effective.
The worn bit on each shaft is 1.75 inches in diameter.
Thanks.
