I have come very close to tipping it over a few times, with an Essex on board.

You could have more outreach and still keep center of gravity by adopting a cherry picker style frame, explained in my crude pic.

I was slightly on edge hoicking a 5.7 ltr V8 out of a Dodge . . . Large amount of weight high up - doesn't take much to require the loan of a van with blue flashing lights and it's driver . . .That is a significant point. It is difficult and hazardous moving it even with its design load. I have come very close to tipping it over a few times, with an Essex on board.

I think the OP should start conditioning the Mrs on why a Liebherr LTM 1450-8.1 would be a fantastic investment for the family. Not only now but for the future.

Got the materials and the hoist, just need the time.....I'm thinking a coup le of unistrut runners on the beams (they're 9"x3") with little trolleys supporting another pair of, heftier, unistrut between them, another pair of trolleys on that with pulleys - poor man's travelling bridge crane, for lathe chucks and the big (14") rotary table on and off the lathe and mill... I'll see when AldiLidl have their 240v winches back in stock, too.
