Ok so its my first time ever making a post so please forgive me on the formatting ect.
The machine is my dads Supermig 180/1, we think it's around 30 years old now, it powers on and all in all the settings and the gas valve works, but when you actually try to weld the wire comes out and arcs very poorly only leaving a very tiny blobby weld! see photos! The wire feed mech was an all plastic cracked and majorly worn out POS feeder and torch.
So I set out on purchasing a much more modern all metal feed unit with a direct euro torch connection. (costing my around £80 in the feeder, torch, euro, and other odd parts)
I work as a catering sheetmetal fabricator as my main job so I spent a while building an all stainless fixture to hold the new feeder and its massive motor and a sandwich type front plate to fix the eurotorch connection to the machine - again please see the photos.
personall I've very happy with how this all worked the whole system I've added feeds fantastically and I've got to say it looks pretty sexual all put together.
new stainless euro torch front plate stainless!
L shape wire feeder holder all from stainless!
(i do have more photos but it only let me do 10)
BUT now the machine's wire feeder works amazing when you actually try to weld I've got the same problem!!! it just arcs poorly and leaves a tiny bobbly weld. puting the wire speed up does seem to make it better and it kinda seems the voltage selection makes no difference.
All I can think is that its not earthing back to the machine correctly? I've connected the earth lead directly with vise grips and still have the same problem! I have also used a multimeter and ensured (well I think) theres no short between the torch and metal case of the machine.
I have a multimeter and somewhat know how to use it, but you'll have to give my pretty simple instructions on what to do with it lol if anyone has any ideas on what to test.
so thats it! please if anyone has some idea of why this machine isnt quite working as intended please say! I'd love some help to get it working correctly!
I look forward to people's ideas and help! also on my craftmanship of the new wirefeeder I added lol
