No Oxy-Acetylene - A Sad Day

Well it had to come. BOC cylinder rental charges are through the roof so today I returned my Y and J sized cylinders to BOCs local agent. For the infrequent use that they get I cannot justify the charge of over £300 per annum.

It's handy to have for cutting off the odd bolt etc but to be honest that rarely happens these days and I'll just have to manage usng other methods.

Or go rent free ,,, initial outlay isnt funny , but you do get it back at the end .
gas kit can be picked up at humble money and it will weld alloy and braze the very best.. and still be cheaper than a tig set
I like to have oxy acet to hand , but it isnt a cheap option any more.

can you weld aluminium with propane , some say you can and some say you cant , Ive only ever used oxy acet to weld aluminium , you can braze with oxy propane and thats a bonus , but propane does go through oxy at a frightening rate.

Go rent free, I did when I got my OA kits, yes the cost hurts, £300 for the two bottles, but works out cheaper.

My local supplier - GWER in Dartford - is going to stop being an agent, they said it doesn't bring in anything like enough business to make the hassle worthwhile. So I might be doing the same soon.

Yes the agent I returned my BOC cylinders to on the Ponswood Industrial Estate said that they were stopping November 15th as it's not ecconomical for them to continue with BOC

I do know Eagle plant to them as well as a few smaller independent hire places.

You pop into an SGS agent,they do an Oxy/Pro fuel kit,one of the garages i work at have it,sorry,dont know how much,but here

I came to the same conclusion 40 years ago....main depot was in Salford.......
I went to Air products then.....
after a while so pee'd of with every thing went to S Afric......
BOC is there suprizingly.....and their bottle are made in the UK..........
I still have a few hobby gaz products, when empty I will look here....plenty of pick-us with small bottle sets on the back.....

I have a BOC W size oxy bottle with 80% still left and that's going back end of the month too, used it once this year for a bit of cutting and that's it.

According to adams gas website they only supply propylene.
