Alwayswelding, you state your a pipey/welder for seven years, many of the questions you ask should have been covered within welding course work while you attended college as an apprentice. Same for polarity with various brand rods, when you mention root face & gap, you make no reference rod thickness, 10 or 12,s? These little points make a huge difference for others to give an educated reply.

I,m assuming you have valid SummitSkill weld certs, or have they expired?

with regards to the welding course during my apprentiship. i did not do the course i left collage to chase sporting commitment, as i was offerd full funding only if i competed/ train full time, so did not do full course my summit skills has just expired, actually practising 6g as opposed to the two welds.

i have a question for you, today i was welding 1.5" shoes on a 2.5" pipe, i used boss 6013 negative all way out running and two stringer runs. there was unfortunaly water running out which makes life rather difficult. plus stand very precurseiusly (bad spelling). could you run your prefered method for this weld by me please. pipe was medium band 2.5 rods also my mate useed wrong hole saw so has 6mm gap either side thanks always

Hi there, no formal weld training, how on earth did you achieve to TR5 standards, did you do MMA & O&A?

Regarding your question, with a 6mm gap as described, I would have your mate use the correct size then weld. 1.5" to 2.5", I,d be using O&A or TIG to weld up.

I,ve no idea who you work for, all sounds a bit heath robertson to me, no wonder client prefer manisman and the like for new installs

What is the point of cutting the hole for a shoe with a hole saw? You might as well put a square branch in, unless you shaped it with a die grinder or file(!) afterwards. If you (your mate) should c*ck up with too larger hole, use a bigger branch fitting and reduce it. As for the welding if MMA is your only option 2.5" medium weight is like a fag paper - one run with a 3.2 if it's downhand, 2 x 2.5 any other position. W/A

a/w if your question is aimed at me then im sorry but i can,t make heads or tails of it, why are you cutting a hole in the product pipe for a shoe?. i would suggest that the best method for the weld you suggest is the one you used as it is already done and dusted .thanks as always lads heres a bit more. f/j.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but why have you (or the designer) chosen to weld these spools using MMA, surely your productivity (and therefore £££) would be increased if you used MIG?

Thinking about it though, you may be able to get more metal down per rod as opposed to MIG???

A few years ago I did some drawing work on sewage pipelines, and our welders used MIG on them, maybe MMA would have been better.

aled, that is a very good question one that has been cropping up at work lately. a guy who works with me on and off has been promoting that approach, my own personal thoughts are that im not too practiced with mig, add to that the fumes involved in a very poorly ventilated shop, cost of buying new machines, i suppose i could go on but i think you get the drift { im against it}. as regards being faster im not too sure about butts but i had to do 2 + 16 " flanges for comparison the 4mm stick was 4mins faster, granted a better mig hand would have cut this time down, but then a 5mm 7024 would offset that. alwayswelding, i hope you don,t think i was being rude i truthfully didn,t understand your question. lads i have quite a few pics of my approach and i would like to explain amps etc, bear with me its just hard to know where to start. bear in mind i can only talk about things i have done recently. f/j

Hey FJ - awesome welds as ever !

I was just about to post you the same question ! Was looking at the Miller site the other day and they do a special pipe welding set - pulsed TIG and MIG. I appreciate that you prefer MMA (and I think we all would if we could weld like you !!) but are there any technical reasons why you wouldn't use MIG on mild steel tube ? I was just thinking that it might be quicker - especially for the cap. Plus no slag to celan / sweep up afterwards ! Would appreciate your thoughts.

if all the butts were rolly polly then yes mig would be far faster,flux core would be a better option though .
heres a 3 simple pointers id instantly consider if welding a 5g pipe with the mig(solid wire)
.it would need to be welded with a short circuit/dip type transfer
.short circuit is prone to producing LOF defects
.one handed operation of a mig torch requires greater skill in out of position welding

f/j - your welding is an inspiration. Are these tubes 16 inches diameter? And what's the wall thickness, please? I'm keen to get hold of some similar pipe and try it myself, just for a hoot! Is this type of pipe quite easy to get hold of from steel suppliers? What would I need to ask for? I just hope it's not £100 a metre, or something.

Go to a fab shop or steel yard and ask em for an off cut George, 9 times ot of 10 they'll be happy enough to just give you a piece.

Thanks F/J, that sums it up nicely.

How I wish i'd have taken some lessons from the welders back then, some of the guys had experience of working in shipyards in the North East and were pretty dammed good! That's what you get from having 20/20 hindsight I suppose.

Are you sure that's a welding machine, it looks more like some sort of nuclear warhead!! Impressive though, whatever it is.

hi mate i work as a pipefitter and if you were after some your best bet would be bss or pipeline / pipecenter. its just mild steel / low carbon steel tube, if you were to pay money for it i wouldnt bother with 16" as it would cost a fortune, some 4" tubes are up to £40 odd a meter! the other option would be to pop down a local scrapyard as im sure you could buy some off of them. pipeline do weld their own headers up for customers so offcuts there would be more likely

thanks for taking the time lads, im sorry but im sure im among the least experienced welders here to comment on mig, i think that jay has made a start on explaining any technical differences and as i said before its an open forum, i want to learn also. george if some lad visited our shop and asked for a few cuttings of 8", pipe, [ thats the size in most pics] im sure if the cuttings were in the bin they would be welcome to them, perhaps depending on the guy involved a box of teabags may come into play. ill bet all shops are the same. f/j

this sch 40 pipe is 8", in all pcs here lads, thats, 90 or 100 amps root, depending on memory or just feel. by that i mean that sometimes 90 and a slower travel speed seem to sui,t maybe its the effects of billy jean being on the radio or not.listen to the background beat of that track and dip top wash down with the wire up and same again. dam that brothergot soul. f/j

thanks alex, if you take a look back to page 2 or perhaps 3 i have posted a pic , its just a drawing, thats just it, my approach, thats centre to centre of line left pause right pause. if it is any use, i hope it is, my father among a number of other old timers always mentioned something i now take as gospel, in stick welding. the actual weld is finsised before the cap, thats exactly what it is, a cap, perhaps the least and in some cases the most important run. i will i hope answer your question, in the future, thats the way to proceed root to cap, f/j heres a few more of my most recent work.no 3 pic is root , hot pass and filler
