Still thinking I just need the metalwork preformed,as you can buy light guage steel easier you can build your own
light gauge steel joist span table is what you need to find
you can also build i joists as well
Wooden i-beams
Does anyone know anything about wooden "engineered" i-joists? Im in the process of (yet again) rebuilding my workshop. I have a need for a couple or more 16ft beams, and a wooden "I-beam" would seem to be perfect for the job. Basically a top and bottom rail (flange?)of 3x2, and a "web" of 12mm...www.mig-welding.co.uk
Yes, you get them from the manuf. who holds both the engineering & more importantlyAnyone any ideas where to get the metalwork for these open web timber joists please?
I've got the timber & don't fancy paying someone to do what I can do myself.
Yup thanks, I've had a look through their website but as it's just a thing I'm ruminating on I'll not be buying the whole joist in. Nothing commercial so insurance isn't an issue for me & I wouldn't want to get too tied up in knots for a project that is purely for my own benefit.Yes, you get them from the manuf. who holds both the engineering & more importantly
the insurance paperwork on the truss.
what are you wanting to use them on ?
You could jig those up pretty quickly, little 4x6 bandsaw cutting the pipe & angle, welding jig while the sawYup thanks, I've had a look through their website but as it's just a thing I'm ruminating on I'll not be buying the whole joist in. I'll wager they would license you.be nice to have a factory doing that near me......
As per Erie Fred's, I'm looking to create an open joistThis thread seems somewhat surreal to me, have I totally misunderstood, or is the question about making wooden trusses, held together with this sort of thing?

Sorry, good point, nothing round I was just trying to demonstrate the open web type thing.Ouch man.
why go to all the trouble with round pipe ?
I think you're probably right but I'm asking because I don't know for sure.for start off i doubt hes going to get the truss metals as they are company made for there trusses
they will be tested to there standards and insurance referenced and thats the point
unless you buy there trusses i doubt very much they will provide you with the metal posi joints
