Coined in 1954 by a columnist in Harper's Magazine, it related to a poem that her mother used to read to her.
Without Googling, it was along the lines of - and they killed Sir Herbert and laid him on the green.
Heard by her as - and they killed Sir Herbert and Lady Mondegreen
Up to that point there was no term for it.
