General point on old cars, FWIW - don't get too hung up replicating the OEM triple skin areas and spot welds. They're there for cost / assembly speed with semi-skilled BIW labour.
Butts, gauge and thought gives you as strong as a repair.

Sounds like great advice, and I keep telling myself the car is built the way it is for a number of reasons that include cost and efficiency. It's not necessarily the strongest design, but strong enough.
I do need to tread carefully though.
