Hi All,
A local auction house had an on-line sale. In amongst the lots was a Sealey Super Mig 180/1 and I bought it on impulse because it was so cheap (£24 but not a recommended buying method )
I'm looking for a wee bit advice on it as I'm not very familiar with Sealey welders.
When I got it home it appears to have been used on a farm as there was straw jamming all the wheels. This was reinforced by the copious dry dust and cobwebs inside when the covers were removed. (See photos)
Once cleaned out it appears to be in decent nick. It looked like it was being used then was just abandoned. The only real flaw I can find is the contactor is "chattering" very badly when energised. The feed to it seems fine though so I'm going to replace it. The contactor is a 4 pole unit but looking at the wiring it would suggest a 2 pole unit would be fine. The four wires for the switching have what appears to be a ring connector that's been cut and spread to use 2 terminals for each wire. (See photos)
Is this a factory thing as it seems a bit odd? The wiring is all very tidy and looks pretty much unmolested so it looks weird.
Can I fit a 2 pole contactor in place of the 4 pole unit? I see no reason why not.
The other thing that looks a bit odd is the wires on the 240/24 volt transformer aren't soldered to their terminals, they're just wrapped round as if they were going to be soldered. (See photos) Should they have been soldered?
I'm really trying to figure out if it has been tampered with after manufacture.
I haven't tried to weld with it yet as the torch liner looks completely wrecked and the chattering solenoid is making the 240v feed to the transformer erratic causing the torch voltage to fluctuate wildly.
Dave
