Howdy folks. Hope someone can help with this one. I've borrowed this spot welder from a mate to fit some panels on my old mini cooper. Set too and managed six or so good welds then keeps tripping the consumer unit. It did the same at my mates house so checked it over, thought the screws in the plug were a little loose and that that would sort it, but sadly not. Any ideas fellas?
I had the same problem at home, changing the breaker in the consumer unit sorted it . Changed from a B type to a C or possibly a C to D . The particular breaker that tripped only covered what was an unused cooker connection with a socket . Probably nothing at all wrong with the spot welder. PS, I’m not an electrician so take advice from a suitably qualified person
That looks like old rubber covered flex and the neutral looks to be damaged just near to the connector. Could be breaking-down elsewhere along its length. Even a small spot welder will draw a large current so check the rating of the mcb. normally need 20 - 25 Amps minimum so a 16 Amp mcb won't hack it. Has the welder got a rating plate on it?
As Mike stated, resistance welding plant, whether single or three phase, draw down a large current. Ask your mate what power rating he uses to compare.
