So... I tried this with the pin vices.... lasted a couple of pulls but the pin vice wasn't up to the job and lost its grip...
Plan B... cut a slot in one of the hooks for the slide hammer... clamp mole grips on nail and hook the slide hammer over the grips.
As some suggested, welding the narrow end of the nail to the body would be there other way to do this with the slot in the puller, but I'd already welded the nails on at that point. However, pulling on a narrower point would be more likely to stretch the panel or just pull the nail right off, I suspect... or distort the panel more around the point.
Results... better than it was but not really a neat finish. It was near to the edge of a wheel arch which probably made the panel stiffer. I think I was probably pulling too hard as well - managed to pull a couple of the nails off in the process ... will try to go more gently next time.
