The steel from Brundles, is that Hot-Rolled?

I was looking for cold-reduced so it has better dimensions, my experience of hot-rolled has been that it is less than dimensionally good

Local / regional steel stock holders. Some specialise in say bar and some in sheet. Advantages are having what you need and price. Brundles are good for other stuff that most dont keep like hammered edge etc.

I no longer look elsewhere other than Brundles for bar, tube or sheet as no one near me can touch them and the £10 delivery for any order under £150 is impossible to beat.

Found a great price on bright steel at last - 100x15mm 6m length £55ea +vat and del of course

So, using that on a 1200x800 bench, gives me 10 slats with a 25mm gap and bench would be 1225mm long.

With a 100mm overhang each side that gives a span of 600mm - I feel that would be plenty stable with only two runner beams supporting it?

Runner beams would be 75x50x6 box section - I have this in stock.

On top of the beams would be 20x20x80 blocks, tapped one place for M8 or M10 csk screws, these would be bolted to the slats, positioned, then tacked. Slats removed and blocks welded on. Slats to have three holes each end so I can stagger them if needed for more area.

This would all be mounted on the frame from my existing bench, a new frame can be made later on as metal comes up

Certainly one method worth considering now I see it. Oh well loads of time to ponder as I can see me just getting finished the next boat I am to be working on when new one will be arriving, so no time for building my water cooler or welding bench

Notice my [deliberate] error on the bench ?

I originally designed the slats to have three holes at each end so they can be stepped which will expand the useful area by 200mm - the Bridgeport CNC couldn't handle the travel on the X axis so I thought just dump one hole and if i want to expand it I can simply turn the slat 180deg - doing this meant i only needed 4 holes not the 5 it has now

Oh well, it was a fun project on the mill, also rigid tapped the mounting blocks on it

Looking good and may be the way I end up going myself now I see it or might have half like that and half a solid sheet.
