0.01 Micron filter requirement for air fed visor.

Why do you need air fed?
Are you doing it in a booth?
Different for professionals doing it daily but I use an Avon S10 gas mask. Nothing gets past that!
I have now switched to a Scott full face mask as the filters are very hard to find for the Avon.

Well I will be doing in an inclosed space.

I was under the impression that isocynates couldn't be filtered out.

While it is a one off job and maybe only a few more in my lifetime... I don't fancy taking any chances.

5 to 600 quid is very cheap in the grand scheme of things if I end up with defective health by not using it.. I see it as simple as that.

On the other hand a friend maintains a friend of his.. sprays Isocynates daily and has done for the last 18 years with just a simple face mask charcoal filter from 3M.

I simply cannot believe that. Maybe he is just doing 1K?

If gas masks didn't filter out isocyanates then the army would be in big trouble. They are designed to filter out far worse!
There are many different filters available - you need a combined filter to get rid of droplets and gases.
I also use a pre filter to stop sawdust etc clogging it when I am cutting wood.
I am very sensitive to fumes - even WD40 gets to me these days.
With a full face mask you smell nothing at all. Not even when your head is right over a pot of thinners.
Use it for cleaning up dog much as well

They can be filtered - the danger is that eventually the filter breaks down and it passes through.
For an occasional DIYer working in a ventilated area it isn't problem. For someone working in a spray booth every day then yes airfed the only way to go.

On thing from a distant memory some of the paint type toxins can just make you more sensitive to certain chemicals in future I cant remember the facts just the story of a bloke who was crippled by a dose of some particular toxin but it was down to a previous exposure that had made him so sensitive

So.. f*** it. I'm going all in. I agree the Army mask would do, but I have the Air visor now, so in for a penny, in for a pound!

I spoke with Holly in Sprayguns Direct and she reckons this A.N.I. 2-Stage filter is good enough. Two stage and no redundant charcoal filter. The filter is user serviceable too, keeping a further lid on costs. I think I am going to go with it.

Just curious Conor, why are you going for a two stage when for less money you could have 3 stage?

I have a 3 way filter for air fed and still have the carbon filter on the belt.
I also put all the workshop air through a charcoal filter used for grit blasting before the air fed filters which I plumb in with quick release fittings only when I'm using it.
A bit over kill, but the big carbon filter is cheaper than the tiny one in the belt and the £40 odd for a replacement filter every 6 months seems a small price to pay for clean dry air. It also gives the other filters an easier time.
I never have a problem with the workshop air.

Yea, I was looking at that one last night, but you are looking at £100 to change filters in it. The carbon cartridge for the IWATA visor is £50.

The two stage is only £30 more expensive as a one off expense, but I think you'd get caught out longer term. It's inkjet printer/razor blade/soda stream economics I think.

With the two stage won't I still have clean/dry air? from those stages? What does the carbon/charcoal do?

But in any case.. it's a frigging minefield. :Boo.

The carbon / charcoal filter is the one that does the real work of cleaning up the air.

The others filter out particles.
The carbon has a massive surface area and a great affinity for combining with chemicals and locking them in place so preventing them passing through to the mask.
But once it saturated it doesn’t work but will still pass air so you don’t know it' s not working.
The cleaner the air going into the carbon filter the longer it will last.

And yes, I'm sure the two way will give you good clean air, however it is missing the carbon filter so the carbon filter on your belt will have a harder time and need changed more often.
I also see the ANI carbon filters are out of stock and no restocking time is given, which would concern me.
You could end up with a filter system but no filters.
