10 Tonne Porta Power

I recall using these many years ago at my late uncle's house. They were in steel toolboxes and took serious abuse.

Classic 80s and 90s Mercedes have a habit of seizing the rear axle mounts. So after my current parts car's axle was stuck last night I went looking for one of these today.

I went for a SIP one which came in a steel case. I intend to use this for DIY autobody work etc only but its one of those tools that when you need it, you really need it.

And good tools always keep their value.

Going to test this out now.

I need to use the duck bill. Which is marked as 1/2 tonne max. I guess I'll be careful to not overload it.

I am really wanting to get a porta power but now that I do I haven't seen any good old used ones for sale (like blackhawk). I have read enough things about all the ones currently available to not want one although I might have to.

I spent an hour with pry bars and a 2m bit of 50x50 and could not get them to budge last night.

Stuck the duck bill above the axle there now and in about a minute the first side broke free Saved time having to cut and air chisel the mount apart to get the sub frame off.



That rod visible on top is a large threaded mild steel Bush. The rubber/ aluminium anti vibration mount swells and seizes hard onto the body mount bush. Hence getting them to separate after 30 odd years can be a challenge.

Handy things.

Used mine last week on a combine, with the spreader, to open the gap on a variable speed pulley and get the belt back on.

This was just messing around on a scrap car which had a bent rear chassis rail



Definitely has more than enough power for the job.

I did crumple other steel as I didnt care and wanted to pull the chassis rail for fun!

Obviously if this was a good car I would take my time and use wood blocks etc. But was good to see how easy it was to manipulate the chassis rails.

There are 4 tonne ones for £120 odd upwards on ebay.

The SIP one cheapest online is £240. I wanted one in a steel box and SIP brand is more trusted to me than no name stuff. At least it should have less chance of issues.

I also wanted the larger 10 tonne version so it should do any job including light fabrication straightening etc.

I got it through a business so no VAT. £200 was a decent price for a tool I'll have for 20 / 30+ years hopefully.

I have one of the generic 10 ton sets plus a load of extra extension poles, plus a couple of spare pumps & rams, all bought at auctions.

It's never actually been used for bodywork but it has came in handy for many other things. Most recently we were stripping heavy pallets for the timber at the mens shed. Some of it was 2 8' 4x4" rails nailed together & we couldn't get them apart. I brought in my porta power & used the duck bill to get them apart.

I have the sealey/clarke version of this for over 20 years, its seen a lot of action in the time being lent to different mates of my father...quality bit of kit although spares are hard to come by !

Yep I "sent it a little too hard bud".

I'll know for again. SIP agreed to replace it no issues and waiting on a new spreader in post. Next time I'll know not to just load the very tip as that is what damaged it

simlar it was an offset atachment for the ram and i pressed 2 hard and it snapped

Just cut the other half to the same length and now it is stronger

I bought a Blackhawk for £50 fairly recently on Facebook, you wouldn't have know if you didn't recognise the label. It also came with a pulling ram and pushing ram. Most kits only have push units.

Yes, most of the time when I have seen them for sale in the past they weren't listed as blackhawk. There is one for sale currently that I believe is blackhawk but the ram is rusty and the hose damaged.

I remember seeing some good ones with all kinds of attachments (sill clamps etc) but I didn't need one then.

I got an old school metal box set...it literally came out the back of a lorry from a guy who was going back to Australia.

I remember he was quite annoyed at the price as he'd have to pay a lot more in Auz to replace it when he got home...I think it was £25 if I remember right.

I've seen sets on eBay...nobody seems to bid on them.
