20ft narrowboat project

While the lockdown has been in place work to be very slow but it's giving me time to work on a little narrowboat project boat that we picked up about 18 months ago.
I was originally built by a company called shotbolt engineering in Cambridge area that used to make farm equipment.

Very querky little boat at only 20ft long.
Since I've had it outside the workshop it's had a complete strip out inside and the back end is having alot of alteration done.

The boat was made as a butty so never had an engine but it's now going to have a electric outboard motor fitted .

Boats are very funny to work on but also extremely expensive to repair

It's definitely got character. We originally brought it to tow behind our 26ft aluminium narrowboat. But once it has had its transformation (nipper the green one) will actually push bitzer for long journeys.

could you put a hinge in the middle ,, like a bendy bus .
or would you need a class one to drive it .

I have seen it done actually but I find if towing to close the propwash hits the front of the boat being towed and slowed it down so by changing it to push it will react like a larger narrow boat.

Do you tow it side by side or behind it? How do the second boat stop?

I meant could you push that way , or do you close tie and push on a pudding.

My good mate lives on a canal boat near Bugbrooke, every once in a while he has to move it somewhere overnight, something to do with his mooring licence.

A few of us hop on aboard and take it for a ride and turn it into a jolly

Furthest we’ve been is Leamington Spa and back, all at a docile 3 mph

It’s a right good laugh

Oh I didn’t say, way way too much beer is consumed

Moved a friends boat from Milton Keynes to Ringstead & it was the best 2 days I've ever had on the canal/river

Some friends of mine have a 28 foot boat with a lister twin, and they push a 20 foot butty with it very successfully.

Generally you would tow behind one an other but if going through wide locks you can Brest them up side by side. Alot easier with longer boats.
