240v thermostat switch?

Not workshop related, but we have a ceramic wall heater in the bathroom. It’s pretty economical but I’d like to make it more so.

I am looking for a thermostat I can link to it to switch it on and off. There is a wall switch outside the door so in principle it should be a simple enough job - I can use the switch as an isolator but use the thermostat to run the heater.

I’d like something that fits in a back box preferably and as it’s outside the zones it doesn’t need to be waterproof but I’d like a remote sensor so I can run that into the bathroom.

We have no plasterboard on the walls at present so it’s an easy job to route things anyone know of one or even better actually own one please?

Where do you want to measure the temperature and where do you want the dial?

The obvious suggestion is a standard CH thermostat, as this will both measure/switch an appropriate range and not look weird. However, don't know if they are good for more than a few amps. Always run one with a relay I guess.

Don't think I'd want to measure/sense the temperature inside of the plasterboard, better to control based on room air temp

I want to measure it in the bathroom but have the unit just outside the door by the light switch and current switch.

I’ll put the probe through the plasterboard into the room when I board it all out.

Danfoss used to make a room thermostat which had a remote sensor rather than it being built in like your usual central heating stat.
It's just their normal basic stat but with the thermistor in remote unit instead of on the PCB.

That’s what I need. I’ve a 12v one for the night heater in the camper. It senses the temp at the bedroom not near the door which is where the controller is

What about an electric underfloor heating thermostat, they are meant for switching high current and you can get remote room sensors. They normally come with a floor sensor but you could leave that dangling somewhere.

That might just do it.

If it’s not doable then I don’t mind. It’s a nice to have. I have a tame electrician so I’ll get his take on things but he’s old and I don’t like bothering him

they are designed for taking the room temperature that they are fitted in along with the floor probe that goes between the element . they are 16 amp

This thing had a 13a plug on it.

would the floor probe work if I ran it through to the bathroom? Or would it have a **** fit as the two temperatures are vastly different?

probably wouldnt work as the floor probe is in the slab about 1 inch away from the heating element

I think and is just my understanding so you need to make your own decision, is that the floor probe is just to stop the floor being cooked, so it doesn’t heat to melting point because someone has left the window open. As with all these things a bit of research is needed for your application.

Floor probes are normally thermistors which have a known resistance at a certain temperature so could be replaced.

Plenty of cheap digital thermostats on eBay , I use one for my home brew

I do have some sensors of unknown origin that came out of a warehouse temperature monitoring system - they are a bit odd as they are not thermocouple or rtd but I’ll dig those out and see if they work with this.

Do well I reckon that would do it. There look to be two heating lives but I’d only need one.
