4 post car lift

I got a 4 post bradbury, with free wheel (single phase) from a local garage closing down... cost me £500. A new set of cables cost me 80 quid (although it didn't need them). It is inspected annually as a part of my insurance.

They are about for the same sort of money as you could make one.

You need to be a little careful swapping the motors from single to three phase to ensure they are the same oil flow rates.... I know someone who did it wrong and their ramp went up and down like the clappers ! (It lost all it's power though)

If all else fails... have you thought about a pit instead ? Much easier to design

One of the guys from "Practical performance car" car magazine has an awesome home-built lift in his garage. Its basically just the lifting kit from a fork lift truck, cemented into the ground. Seems to work a treat lifting his 27 litre, merlin engined Rover SD1.

I figured this is the best place to ask. Has anyone any experience of these ramps:

They look like they would be perfect for my little garage. I have a tiny little single garage and I can't get the car (beetle) high enough on the axle stands to work comfortably underneath it. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I rent so I don't want to spend too much money and I don't think I have the welding skills to make my own.

I'm guessing by the sound of it, it's similar to the "Tilting Car Lift" on this page linked to above. However, that doesn't look particularly safe from what I can see in the pics. Usually, the point of lifting a car is to get underneath it. I wouldn't be going anywhere near that contraption, in spite of its rating.

Had he not mentioned "Merlin", I too would have suspected a missing decimal point but the Merlin really was a 27 litre engine. In Battle-of-Britain Spitfire spec, it kicked out 1030 horsepower. Bet that Rover's a bit quick...

Is it this one, or are there two of them around?

If it is then it's 'only' a 600bhp Meteor out of a tank - a naturally aspirated derated and simplified version of the Merlin. Still a fun project though!
