40mm i/d internal bearing puller

Can anyone make a suggestion on how to get this bearing out, it has limited access from behind and is 40mm i/d, without spending a fortune on a new tool.

Well I suppose I could weld on a large nut and use slide hammer.

Stick it in the oven at 100deg for a while - it might just fall out

could drill through and fit or weld some bolts if the bearing no good so you have something to grip

I was going to suggest a nut and slide hammer but three or four smaller nuts on edge round the outer race. You can then use the slide hammer in a stud pattern type affair to 'walk' it out. may be a bit easier than a straight pull?

As above, heat never goes amiss. See it you can get it as hot as you think is sensible, then shock it with a CO2 extinguisher. That got me out of the **** a few times

@RaceDiagnostics You're welcome to borrow my Sykes Pickavant 'micro puller' which might do it. It has a reach of 73mm and will do internal bearings. The legs are reversible, like this one.........

Ive got what you need, kindly bought from a kind gent on this forum.

Sykes Pickavent blind bearing puller kit. You drill through between thé bearings, twist some 'things' in, and extract it. If you're really, really stuck, you can pay postage both ways.....

I have had some success getting the wheel bearings out of HGV trailers with the method of drilling / cutting each race in turn in three places then folding it in on itself with a small sharp chisel. You need to be quite accurate and have it held well but its a reliable method that's worked for me. Anyone who's done BPW hubs will know where I'm coming from!

It's a bit large for the oven.

It's on the other side of this bell housing. I plan to "scrap" this one as it has a damaged spline and use one that's been in my shed for 11 years, but the bearing on the "shed" one is rusty and needs replacing.

New bearing is fairly cheap (£13) compared to a new spline (£280) and the bearing looks easier to change than the spline.

I can't find any detail on haw the spline is fitted other than one 10 year old comment on a US forum saying its pressed in.

Can't you just weld some angle to it and crowbar it out. Coat, door...

Weld a nail or bar across the bearing, long drift and cosh it out.

Weld a slide hammer on

Or
Pick the race apart so you can extract the inner race then all you have to do is run a bead of weld round the outer race and it’ll want to fall out on its own.


That’s without needing any fancy tools.
Being a welding forum, I don’t think a welder counts as a fancy tool...
