4x4 tyre recommendations

pet hate of mine this...easily solved 9 times out of 10 by rotating the tire around the rim 180 degrees and starting again

Mine too, drives me mad. I fully understand tyre places don't pay much and have low margins and I have time to spend getting it right. I've spent up to an hour getting a Land Rover rim balanced nicely.

I've seen wheels where they have weights 180 degrees apart, you can get odd things happen like when you do the test spin but when that happens I take them off and start again.

I big open wheels I always run split weight program and hide the weights behind spokes.

As already said, not cheap but well worth it if you are keeping something. 20 years a go I was running Classic Range Rover as a daily. First set of BFG AT did 80K and they were still legal, I didn't hesitate in buying a new set. That RRC ran so nice on those tyres, you would think they wouldn't grip or handle given how long they last but they are amazing. I spent so much time driving it I was fully in tune and used to be able to rag it around like a hot hatch, would regularlry pull up with smoke coming of my EBC Green stuffs. I remember my mate having ease out on the entry to a roundabout coming out of Reading when he was following in his company Mondeo. When we got where we were going he gave me a load of abuse because he had assumed his Mondeo would easily take it as quick as I could

They're Green Stuffs, I set some of those on fire just running around a parking lot once

Another vote for BFG, these have been on the Landrover cherrypicker for fourteen years.

I suspect quite often. Particularly on a 4x4. I know the local tyre place had a real job trying to balance one wheel and eventually checked out the rim and it had taken a hard knock so wasn't true. They got it sort of balanced but left it as the spare.

That was 18months ago and at the time was getting them for sub £80 trade a tyre.

Now it's just silly the same as everything else.

I have a set of bfg at on the hilux due to being on it when bought it. When they are due replacement, will be going to the coopers or maxxis mt. As can get them for £135 a tyre. (Like what's on the l200 and shogun below)

Tyres are stupid now. Just sorted a set for a guy for a unimog. Got them from Ireland in the end.

Over here they’re five grand a set. Got the same ones home from Ireland about three-ish grand.

Speak to anyone about anything now and it’s the same.

I'd love the BFG MT'S but I just can't afford them, the knobblies are for my off road trips or if the weather turns bad and I'll keep the Bridgestones for daily use and the summer.

I've narrowed it down to either maxxis 762 or nankang ft9. The nankangs are £478 delivered and the maxxis £569

If you don't need M/T's and just want a more aggressive style of A/T, have a look at the Maxxis AT811 and if possible in a LT rating, they are also good as an all round tyre on the highway without too much noise or loss of fuel economy plus they handle well. I rarely go on extended true bush bashing but on the roads I have taken they have not let me down. I had 2 sets of the Hankook RF-10's for about 8 years on my Jeep Grand Cherokees before switching to the AT881's and whilst the RF-10's were a good tyre, these seem to be better. Be aware that it also depends on the vehicle as the same tyre on two different vehicles can give very different results.

I've just put my second set of Yokohama Geolandar's A/T on my Surf, 265/70/16.
Good on the road, quite ride, decent wet grip and last for ages. I've not done much off road but have towed a few stranded cars, Tesco vans out of the mud down my lane.

Went for a set of Maxxis 764's as ebay had a 20% off today.

I'll keep them for crappy weather as I have a 12 mile trip to work on country roads and for when I go proper off roading so I don't just kill them

That's a good deal with 20% off.

I pulled the trigger on on some 265/65/17 nankang conquers earlier in the week
(36hrs before the 20% off on ebay! Typical)

I'd almost pulled the trigger 2 days ago on a set of 3 I'd put an offer on but one of the 3 had sold by the time i went to accept so didn't bother. Pleased it didn't work out on those.

I've used Avon before but not on a 4x4, they are a decent tyre manufacturer

On my 4x4 Mazda .. I'm using Goodyear Wranglers with kevlar ... they seem very good on the wet soft stuff and not too noisy on the black hard stuff .. and so far long lasting .. unlike the MaxisI had before ...
