6010 Stuttering and stopping

Hi

Got some 6010 2.5mm off the 'Bay to have a try with. First time I welded with this, kept stuttering and stalling even at 90 amps. I have a Parweld 162 with a 'cel' setting which I used. I tried all sorts to stop it happening, different angles, amps, even went and had a cup of tea for a fresh start!

Are these just more tricky to get the hang of or are there dubious quality sticks about?

The parweld 162 isn’t a true Cel machine. It might strike and hold a 6011 but I don’t fancy it’s chances with a true 6010. Not many machines run them properly despite having a so called Cel mode.

Some rods are better than others, but it’s probably your machine more than anything. Go for 6011 rods which it’ll run ok.

ESAB NU5 are a lovely rod. Super 7 aren’t a brand I would normally suggest but they used to do a 6010 rod which is really a 6011 for sensible money.

I'm tempted, the colour of the rods reminds me of an old American welder I used to know who was always on about 'them red hippy rods' I've not seen a red welding rod before, are these what you mean are 6011?

They look exactly the same as the ones I bought. Only got 5 rods though to give them a try. No idea of the brand.

look like 5p + on a good machine they will burn down to 55 amps at 2.5 mm dia
'why cels your never going to use them anyway , esab 6011 nu5 are more fogiving .and you can use them on ac too but for the hobbyist waste of time id say

Yes they're the ones.
Must be a couple of years since I bought any but they did work.


Cellulose rods may not be 'needed' for the home user, but they are useful. Vertical down is very quick with them, larger gaps and horrible dirty work can be managed and they're easy to tack with. Nothing wrong with wanting them.

Where could I get some good quality 6011 rods in the UK at a reasonable price?

The 610 of the bay you show i tried them and they did run on my gys fv200 but the 6011 nu5 run very well also of the bay its one of those things you get a machine you want to try all rods lol

A welding distributor of course.
The two I know of in Kent are Electroweld and Wes.
Pop in and see Tony at electroweld he does ESAB stuff so he might have the 6011’s on the shelf.

I doubt they’d split a tin.
Bearing in mind Nu5 comes in 20lb tins.

Why on earth do you want to run a cel. Unless you’ve got a proper cellulosic capable machine it won’t run a 6010.

It might run a 6011.

There’s only a few compact 230v machines I know that run a cellulosic rod properly.

The old trans tig 2000 chomps cels well. Strange though because the mw2000 isn’t great with them.

I’ll try out the new Micor tig 200 on cels next week as well and let you know what that does. That’s got a Cel mode too

i think its best for our novice friend to practise with an easy to use good quality6013 first
6010 will give an instant reminder if your not wearing ppe, burn straight through your new trainers

Would a good alternative be a 6013 RC Rod like Overcord Z or Bohler Phoenix Blau?

Fincord M are fantastic rods but are a Rutile.

If the OP is after a Rutile/cellulosic.

You want Bohler OHV or ESAB 46.44

Interestingly the name nu5 came about because there are only 5 ingredients.

I was told a much more complex reason than that

Lincoln made Fleetweld 5P and 5P+......They started a factory in the UK in Welwyn Garden City to make electrodes including 5P etc.......Someone in Lincoln somehow became paranoid that the UK Goverment would Nationalise them and steal all their secrets (they were very very secretive about their methods). So they removed all the stuff they were scared of losing and sold the plant to GKN and it became GKN Lincoln Electric but they couldnt make or use the name 5P....so they came up with NUFIVE in an attempt to make it recognisable as an alternative BUT sometime along the way chose to classify it as E6011 (no-one ever explained that one to me)......Later GKN sold out to Arcos....who later became part of ESAB.......Lincoln UK had to buy back the names from ESAB who held the rights to the name LINCOLN ELECTRIC UK and some of the product names, also some of the Lincoln Smitweld names due to an earlier connection with BOC Murex (who later became part of ESAB)

All very insestuous isnt it.

Also in all these years I have never seen a coating formula with only 5 ingredients...It might have as Ive never seen the spec so I dont know for sure
